Thank you for your always fascinating newsletter, and for this special one that calls attention to the museums and libraries that are so important to this kind of work, and more generally to preserving our heritage.
A year ago, I helped remove a ca. 1850 printing press from a museum that I had worked in many years ago and had been a visitor to before that. It was being completely gutted so that it could be "updated" and made "more relevant". Even though it had nothing to do with the current national level political whacko-ness, it was hard to take. The library I have used for all of my life is still thriving. Thanks for your books. They say "This is part of our journey , where we have come from, what we can do".
When I was a kid at Sacred Heart School I’d go after school (fifth grade, I think) over the to Pratt Library where my father’s moving company was in the process of moving the library to its’ next location on Middle St. at Weston Park. I’d load books into cartons and generally get in the way of the guys actually doing the work. As for Trump, I don’t much care for the semi literate misogynistic carney barker much, and Elon makes me gag, but I think as a country we’ve been overspending for decades. How much and where you cut is always going to be problematic but I have to give some credit for at least beginning to address the problem. That said, I’m sorry for what the cuts are doing to our culture.
I was, at first, shaken with fear by the mercenary way that destructive changes are being wrought on institutions. I can't believe that the public will just stand by and watch heritage and history be eviscerated. These morons will be retarded in their efforts by popular dispute. The same shills and cretins that put this power structure into place will realize the error of their ways. I have confidence in the ability of the American public to correct a grievous wrong once they recognize that the correct path is being deviated.
I just visited the Boston MFA and saw the wonderful collection, including your chest that showed what the original colors of the pieces might have looked like. It's a great exhibit. I couldn't agree more on the cruel and tragic events taking place right now across the country.
Thank you for this! I'm life long Boston area resident and library and museum lover. What is happening in Boston and all over the United States is truly horrifying in so many ways.
Thanks Peter for the insight, pics, and knowledge you provide. This one was special.Took looking at the pics on a bigger screen to get the Bill reference!!!

Thanks for speaking up about the current madness in Washington. Being politely silent certainly isn't going to fix things.
A heart felt, and rational, case for being more thoughtful in cutting expenses. Will they Listen?
Thanks for this, Peter.

Please continue posting political commentary. Remember quotes from Elie Wiesel:
“We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”
“The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference.”
“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.”
This administration is driving us straight into The Dark Ages. We must RESIST! I fear for our futures and those of my children and grandchildren.
Thank you for all your work!

Well nothing stops the State of Massachusetts or Boston or private individuals from making up the loss in grant money.
