These are beautiful. This article makes me want to dig deeper in to desk boxes. I have a very modern standing desk with no drawers. A desk box may be a storage solution.
I made the space in the middle inside fit an 8 1/2 x 11 pad with some space around it. Tills for pens/pencils, etc and small stuff in the drawers. The original is stained with ink here & there.
Thanks Peter. If I wanted to research this a bit, how would I go about it. I ask because I've tried researching pre industrial layout tools, ala Euclid's door, but haven't been very successful. I guess I'm expecting pictures or drawings. I'm starting to think that's not the way to go. When looking into stuff this old
And just by coincidence, I found my carving of the Savell boxfront, on a workshop clearout a few days ago. Must have been done when you were here in the UK, because it's got your cross stamp on it.......and that's the only time I got to use your stamp!
Stunning!
It was, and a lot of water has passed under the Rivers Joinery bridge. I very much hope our paths cross again.......

I've only seen a few desk boxes in the flesh. New England ones aren't all that common. This website has a lot of examples, with measurements. That would be how I would start - trying to get at what a "typical" size is/was. Some are bigger, a few are quite small...most partitioned inside. https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search?q=chest&geolocation=United+States&department=1&era=A.D.+1600-1800
What a beauty.
thank you.
Beautiful box.
Thank you, glad you like it.
