Two boxes for sale in today’s post. One brand-new, the other a used box, about 10 years old. I’ll talk about the new one first -
CARVED OAK & PINE BOX
I finished the first carved box of the year (it’s really the 2nd, but the first one I’ve finished.) The front board is a strapwork design that I carved while shooting a new video about those patterns. Once I had that, I went ahead and made a box out of it.
It’s like most of my boxes - 17th-century designs and construction, but not a copy of a particular box. Red oak, riven from green wood. White pine top & bottom. Wooden pintle hinges. Linseed oil finish. The end boards are from a different oak log than the front. Over time the color difference will disappear.
A lidded till inside - also oak with a pine bottom.
One caveat - like most woodworkers, I need to point out what went wrong - only because I don’t want any surprises. I was planing a perfect white pine board for the lid when one or two more swipes cut into some leftover insect tunnels. They’re long-gone, this board’s been in the shop for nearly 2 years. But once I hit the lid with the oil those marks became more visible. I can live with it - so if the box passes, I’ll find a way to use it.

CHIP-CARVED PINE BOX w/ drawer
This one is different.
As I wrote above, it’s used. It’s old. Years ago I decided I’d like to learn how to cut dovetails. I’d cut some before but never enough to get the hang of it. So I made a lot of boxes (and tool chests) - this is one of those boxes. I forget when I made it, I’d guess 10 years ago. Around that time, I was dabbling in chip carving too. The sliding lid has a large rosette - perfect for catching dust.
I used to use this box when I taught spoon-carving. I gave away all those student spoon knives years ago & this box has sat in the loft since then. Every time I see it, I think “I should use that for something…” - but never came up with anything. My house & shop have enough boxes. So this one is up for grabs - but I can’t price it. So I’ll take offers. Email or comment - best offer by Sunday Feb. 16, 8pm eastern time gets it. Plus shipping, which shouldn’t be much, it’s light.

There’s no mechanism for locking the drawer (subsequent ones got such a thing…) so you have to be careful carrying it around or the drawer can dump out. Here’s some more photos - I forgot to say - the drawer pull and drawer bottom are black walnut. How’s that for backwards - primary wood is pine, secondary is walnut!
