I didn’t know I was going to do this today. I like teaching workshops, I don’t do it as much as previously. But one part I always struggle with is getting ready to teach workshops; sorting, packing, making lists. I was supposed to be getting ready today, but avoided it for most of the day. And that meant I had time to shoot a video I’ve been thinking of lately.
Some of my work is making verbatim copies of a given piece of 17th-century furniture. Other times, I’m making something “in the style of…”
When I carve stand-alone panels, it’s the latter. And I thought it might be helpful to show how I “compose” the designs when I’m not copying them. The elements I use in these carvings all come from period pieces I study - but I sometimes combine them this way & that. So I sat down and shot some video showing how I draw one in preparation for carving. Like all my videos, it goes on a long time. I thought “this’ll be quick, I can do a few of them…” - but when I sorted out the video, the first drawing took over 15 minutes. So I cut it off there & will come back to these later. I shot 3 drawings I think.
Another thing I struggle mightily with is working on the website. So much so that you didn’t even know I had one. I tend to forget it myself. Recently I tried to set up the Carving Drawings that I worked on a few years ago with Jeff Lefkowitz. The printed ones are gone, but now they’re PDFs you can purchase & download. IF I did it right…
(if I didn’t, I’ll sort it out when I get back from my trip to Galbert’s…)
So wonderful to see how you break this down. Thank you.
Brilliant! Thank you, it’s great to see the process as you would think through it. I am still finishing out my carved box at my snail’s pace from your last workshop and hope this one is going well for you! Hopefully with nicer weather. Thank you so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge!
