These days I’m not teaching a lot of classes. All that prep, clean-up & travel got a bit weary-ing. So now I just schedule a class one at a time usually. I’m done for this year, but next week registration will open for a carved box class I’ll teach at Pete Galbert’s on the Maine/New Hampshire border. I’ve taught the Jennie Alexander chair at Pete’s a few times, but a month ago was the first carved box class we’ve done there. So now that we know we can do it - makes sense to do it again
Six students, six days. An oak box with pine top & bottom. Interior till. Wooden hinges. Carved on the front & sides mostly. Time permitting. Some left the ends blank. I can’t. Bernie came all the way from Melbourne, Australia - here’s what he carved on the ends of his box.
The April 2025 class will be Sunday April 6-Friday April 11th. Registration - at Pete Galbert’s site on Monday October 7, 8AM eastern time.
Here’s the link - pay no attention to the link title, must be leftover from chairmaking
Only 6 spots, but if it fills, get on the waiting list. You never know & we see spots open up regularly. Life intrudes.
Here in my shop, I’m making a couple more boxes right now - the past couple of years I’ve gone all in for carved lids - so these two will get that treatment.
I like Bernie's carving. Nice and light. Thanks for posting.
The course was so enjoyable and valuable. I learned a great deal from Peter, and from my fellow participants. Peter is a master carver and joiner who loves his craft and has dedicated his life to sharing it with others. He is a skilled teacher, very patient, helpful and validating of everyone's work. The course is structured so he takes you through the basics of carving, through to the details of constructing your own box. For me, it was worth the time, money and effort to come half-way around the world. I would do it again. Plus I met a bunch of great people who will remain in my mind.
