I have a slew of stuff underway lately. That photo above is 4 box fronts - waiting for some oak boards to dry a bit further before assembling any of these. So some chairmaking (& birding) has filled my time while the boxes wait their turn. Some of you will remember I’ve been slowly re-learning how to make Windsor chairs, mostly for my own satisfaction - but I am supposed to be making my living this way…and if I keep at it these chairs are going to pile up around here.
I was at my sister’s house recently and stumbled into what is probably my first continuous arm chair - it’s initialed & dated 1988. I had just learned the ins & outs in Curtis Buchanan’s class the previous year. In 1988 I stayed for the summer with Drew & Louise Langsner as their summer intern. I was an awful candidate, next to useless. But we had fun and I got to rubberneck in Curtis’ 2nd class that summer.
I think the plans and shape of this chair are from Drew though. The elbow bend is more relaxed than what Curtis used/uses. The chair was in OK shape - the center stretcher had withdrawn some from the side stretcher so I pulled it together and pegged it. Back in the shop, I’ve been working at a continuous arm chair after having made this one in Pete Galbert’s class -
