The cupboard I’m making has two panels decorated with 3 narrow arches across each panel. They are applied to the panel, with narrow maple wedges setting off each component of the arch. The one at the top of the arch makes sense as a keystone - but the horizontal versions have the same shape - these mimic the imposts in actual architecture - but the wedge shape is a bit off. I wish the joiners who made them had made this component straight instead. But I’ll get over it.
In a post later this week I’ll show how I turn the arches. I thought today I’d first look at several different versions found on New England furniture of the period. The first one I learned is carved - and is an arch only in the most vague sense.
