2 ladderback chairs for sale
UPDATE: These two chairs sold. I have 2 more right behind them, if anyone missed out and still wants a chair, send me a note & I’ll send some photos. Otherwise, I’ll post the next 2 next week. Thanks, PF
I made these two chairs in preparation for a class I just taught last week with Joel Paul at Pete Galbert’s shop. Now the chairs are available for sale. Some background - these are my versions of the chair made famous (or notorious anyway) by Jennie Alexander. I worked with JA for decades - usually long-distance but often in her shop in Baltimore. My chairs are a bit heavier than hers, she might call them “wooden” and not in a nice way! My slats are 3/16” thick vs. hers at 1/8”. My posts are a bit thicker too - but in all other respects they’re close to what she & I made together many times.
Red oak chair, Sept 2023
This first one has red oak posts & slats with a mixture of red oak and ash rungs. Hickory bark seat. Linseed oil finish.
Here’s a detail of the seat-weaving - done in hickory bark. It looks great now, but will only look better with use.
dimensions: overall height at rear posts 33 1/2”, seat height is 17 1/2”, seat depth front to back 13”, width across the front posts 17 1/4”, across the tops of the rear posts 16 3/4”
Ash chair, Sept 2023
The next chair has posts of ash heartwood, red oak slats & rungs. Hickory bark seat. Sometimes I’ll run across an ash log with enough straight clear heartwood to make posts - a nice subtle color that I like a lot. Heartwood or sapwood, ash is one of my favorite woods for chairmaking.
This one has a diamond pattern in the bark seat -
At first the different woods stand out but over time they blend together nicely. Chairs like this get better with use. Dimensions here are mostly the same as the chair above - but the seat height and overall height are 1/2” less than the previous chair. It was a measuring error…of course.
The chairs are $1,400 each including UPS shipping in the lower 48 states. Or you can save $200 and pick the chair up here in Massachusetts. Send an email if you’re interested in one - payments these days are usually paypal - but I’ll take a check too, I’m old-school. Email is Peterfollansbee7@gmail.com
